A Pre-School That Touched Our Heart

One person’s vision can change the lives of many. Kenny Mleke had a vision of a place where underprivileged children could go to school, get an education and ultimately change their lives and that of their community.

The Bagamoyo Children Carers Association (BACCA) is a Non-profit (NGO), which provides free education to underprivileged and orphaned children in Bagamoyo. In addition to that, students receive free uniforms, books, school supplies, and a daily meal. The NGO was launched on 5th August 2005 by a small group of local Bagamoyo residents.

The ideas of the NGO came from Kenny Mleke who from a very poor background and spent his childhood in difficult environments at home and school. On his return to Bagamoyo as an adult, he made a promise to start an NGO to help the children in his community, have a better education than the one he had and thus providing them with a better future.

HMT was taken by the efforts and enthusiasm of Kenny and his team. They don’t have much as a group but they have managed to set up something small that is changing the lives of many children whom otherwise would have not had such a chance in life.

The school visit gave us an idea of what is needed and how we as HMT can assist. The school needs better infrastructure, for classroom, teacher’s room, eating area, toilets and playing ground. It also needs better learning and teaching materials; desks, books, and shelves and school supplies.

We also got a chance to meet some of the students whose live have been changed by BACCA.

Fatuma is one of the students BACCA has supported, and she has now moved to Primary School and doing well.

Fatuma’s father died early and her mother abandoned her as a newborn, leaving her aunt and grandmother to jointly support her. Fatuma’s aunt has no means of employment and relies on sparse support from relatives who live in distant cities. She would like to become a teacher when she grows up so that she can live out her dream of giving back to other children.

If BACCA sounds like a project you would like to support please let us know at info@hassanmaajartrust.org of how you would like to support.
Thank you
