Nostradamus, best known for his prophecies, published a cookbook in 1555 while the oldest surviving cookbook in English is believed to be ‘The Forme of Cury’, circa 1390. Moving to the present day, despite the wide array of recipes online and a drop in book sales globally the cookery book remains a popular purchase for foodies across the globe. For many the dishes of their cookery book of choice evoke nostalgic memories or conjure up the flavours of far-flung places. The UK’s Independent newspaper described the cookbook as an ‘escapist experience’, offering both inspiration and pleasure, in addition to handy recipes.
