Our First Project With Children With Disabilities

This week we partnered with the Dar es Salaam Mentally Handicapped Children Support Group (DMHCSG) to donate 30 desks to their new wing of classrooms for children with Mental Disability at the Majimatitu Primary School in Mbagala, Temeke district.

Majimatitu primary school grounds had the air of celebration and jubilation as an all student Steel Brass Band group played tunes and other students danced and sang. The students in their uniforms of patriotic colours of the nation’s flag, of blue, yellow, black and green were happy and excited of the events to come.

The event was attended by the District Education Officials, Parent Teacher Association members and their Chair, Community Elders, Parents of the children with disabilities, teachers, and students. The Head teacher Mr. Abdallah Mgomi, of Majimatitu hosted the event.

Speaking at the handover ceremony the Chair of the Dar es Salaam Mentally Handicapped Children Support Group (DMHCSG), Mrs. Rose Rupia said, “our support group doesn’t have a lot of money and we rely on donations from various organisations, individuals and through partnership such as the one with the Hassan Maajar Trust. We really appreciate their generous donation of these desks”.

Giving her thoughts and thanks our Executive Director said, “our aim is to ensure that every child in Tanzania has a conducive learning environment and we cannot do it alone. This is our first project working with special needs students and it wont be the last. We thank the Dar es Salaam Mentally Handicapped Children Support Group (DMHCSG) for making us part of this process and we really appreciate and commend them on the work that they do for these children”.

The event was well received by the teachers, students and all invited guests. The Head teacher thanked HMT and DMHCSG for supporting their school. “ I would like to take this opportunity of behalf of the school board, parents, teachers and students to say a heartfelt thank you to HMT and the DMHCSG for their generous donation and contribution to our school. This special needs wing is very important to the children who come to this school and they now have their own space where they can learn and have access and a chance to some education”, said Mr. Abdallah Mgomi, Head teacher, Majimatitu Primary School.
