HMT in Mtwara

Last week, HMT was in Mtwara for a fews days visit to Regional and District Education authorities.

We are also a chance to visit a number of schools in Masasi and Nanymbu.

For those who don't know,Mtwara is in the south of Tanzania and has been underdeveloped for a long time: development is constrained by the lack of highway and energy infrastructures. The Dar es Salaam-Kibiti-Lindi-Mtwara road has been improved by the completion of the Mkapa bridge over the Rufiji River. Mnazi Bay gas promises to provide reliable and adequate electricity for powering industrial and commercial activities in the region.
Mtwara Region is administratively divided into six districts: Masasi, Nanyumbu, Newala, Tandahimba, Mtwara Urban and Mtwara Rural.

Mtwara is also famous for Cashew nuts.

There is a shortage of 36,158 desks in Mtwara.

A price for a desk seating 2 to 3 students in Mtwara ranges from Tsh 80,000/- to Tsh 90,000/- including VAT.

There is a shortage of teachers' tables and chairs. At Kambarage Primary School in Masasi, there are 4 plastics chairs and 9 tables for 20 teachers. Teachers have no choice but to use the desks as their table and even at time take desks out for meetings and other school activities.

One of the classrooms  building at Mnonia Primary School in a village in  Nanyumbu District. This classroom was built by teachers, parents and village elders, because they had had enough of waiting for funds. This school only has 2 buildings housing 4 classrooms, therefore the students have to take class in shifts.
