Tsh 26million raised from Tigo Tuchange Campaign

Press Release

Tigo Tuchange contributes towards school desks

15 March 2012, Dar es Salaam. Over one hundred participants took part in a two-kilometer charity walk to mark the beginning of the Tigo Tuchange initiative to raise money for the education sector in Tanzania. The Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Hon. Shukuru Kawambwa flagged off the walk on March 3, 2012, with the cutting of a ribbon, setting the walkers on their way from Sheiklango Millennium Business Complex to the Ubungo traffic lights.  All throughout the country, thousands of people took to the streets to top-up their airtime using Tigo Rusha, in support of the initiative.

“I would like to thank all the participants who supported this year’s initiative,” said Mr. Diego Gutierrez, Consumer/Deputy General Manager at Tigo. “We’re happy to know that the results of our collective efforts will make a positive difference to the hundreds of school students in the country,” he said.

Sh26 million was raised through the collection of Tigo Rusha top-ups made between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on that day. Tigo customers who purchased airtime during that hour used their airtime while Tigo matched the same amount towards the initiative. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Hassan Maajar Trust (HTM), a long-term programme designed to improve the learning environment in schools by providing desks to various schools in-need.

HMT chairperson Ambassador Mwanaidi Maajar said, “We are extremely encouraged by this initiative and we would like to thank Tigo for catering to the education needs of children in Tanzania. The donations we have received today will be used to purchase desks for some schools that we have already identified to be in need. Our aim is to ensure that that every child sits on a desk.  We see this as a step closer towards our mission.”
