Tigo Hands over Tuchange Funds to Hassan Maajar Trust

Press Release

Tigo hands over Tuchange funds to Hassan Maajar Trust

16 July, 2012, Dar es Salaam. Tigo has handed over the funds raised during the Tigo TuChange charity walk to the Hassan Maajar Trust (HMT), a long-term programme designed to improve the learning environment in schools by providing desks to various schools in-need.

The handing over ceremony was attended by Hon. Dr. Shukuru Kawambwa, the Minister of Education and Vocational Training, HMT members, senior Tigo executives and staff.

“One of our goals is to ensure that students have better learning facilities and a more conducive environment for study,” said Hon. Dr. Kawambwa. “We applaud Tigo for embracing good corporate citizenship and urge other companies to support the government in building sustainable development of this country,” he said.

The cheque of Sh26, 000,000 was presented on behalf of Tigo by Alice Maro, the Public Relations Officer, to the HMT executive director, Ms. Zena M Tenga. The money was raised through the collection of Tigo Rusha top-ups made between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on March 3, 2012. Tigo customers who purchased airtime during that hour used their airtime while Tigo matched the same amount towards the initiative.

“This initiative is in line with our Corporate Social Responsibility mission to understand the needs of society and communities in areas where we do business, in order to make meaningful and sustainable contributions to their upliftment,” said Ms. Maro.  “We would once again like to thank everyone who contributed to raising these vital funds for this well-fitting cause,” she said.

Based on pricing secured from local suppliers, the funds raised will cover the cost of 720 Desks, each with the capacity to sit 3 pupils.  The project will therefore sit a total of 2160 pupils.

Under the project five (5) schools from two districts (Njombe & Makete) in Njombe region will receive desks as follows: Maendeleo: 135, Umoja: 196,Kumbila: 200, Makonde: 152 and Mahanji: 37.

The schools were selected on the basis of the most in need. The project will not only benefit the schools and students, but by procuring the desks locally within the region we are also creating employment opportunities for businesses and young people in those areas thus bring in economic development in those particular areas.

“I would like to express our sincere gratitude on behalf of HMT to Tigo for their involvement in giving these children a platform that will enable them to be self-reliant and in turn allow them to empower those that may need their assistance in the future,” said Ms. Tenga.  “When students learn in a comfortable and conducive environment they are more focused and produce better results thus securing a better future, and through sustainable projects of this nature we can make major strides in contributing towards economic development within the community,” she said.
